Withania somnifera, also known as ashwagandha, Indian ginseng,or winter cherry, is a plant in the Solanaceae or nightshade family. Several other species in the genus Withania are morphologically similar. It is used as a herb in Ayurvedic medicine.

It is sometimes called “Indian ginseng.” probably because it is employed as an adaptogen or tonic in Ayurvedic traditional medicine.It is not, however, related to “true” ginseng (P. ginseng, P. quinquifolium). The root is used medicinally, although the seeds, shoots, juice and leaves have all been used traditionally as well.Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Root is an herb that has been used for thousands of years in India.The name comes from the peculiar odor of this herb, which means “smells like a horse”! Ashwagandha is a small woody shrub or herb in the solanaceae (tomatoes,  eggplant) family that grows about 2 feet in height with greenish or lurid yellow flowers. The root is ready for harvest only after one year.  Most tonic roots take years (ginseng requires 7 years) before medicinally ready for harvest.Ashwagandha is considered an adaptogenic tonic helping with immunity,  energy,  and the reproductive system.  What is unique about this herb is,  while being an energy tonic,it is also beneficial for calming the mind.
